TWO divers received recompression treatment at Wirral's Murrayfield Hospital after a quarry incident in which one man died.

The pair had attempted to rescue a 41-year-old man who had got into difficulties at Dorothea Quarry near Caernarfon, North Wales on Sunday.

The victim was airlifted to hospital in Bangor where he was pronounced dead.

A spokeswoman for North Wales Police said: "At just after 1.15pm, North Wales Police were requested to attend at Dorothea Quarry, which is just outside Caernarfon, following reports that a diver had been pulled out after getting into difficulty while he was 40 metres under the surface.

"The 41-year-old man was pulled out by two other divers.

"The air ambulance attended the scene, along with a helicopter from 22 Squadron and the man was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd where he was pronounced dead.

"The two divers that assisted in pulling the man out of the water have been taken to a hospital on the Wirral for de-compression treatment."

A spokesman for Murrayfield recompression unit - which provides treatment for diving incidents from the Scottish Borders to the West Midlands - said the two men had fully recovered and have been sent home.

North Wales Police are currently investigating the full circumstances of the incident.
