MORE than 600 people put on their running shoes for the 21st Hoylake 10k Coastal fun run on Sunday.

Putting the 651 runners under starters orders outside Hoylake Community Centre was Wirral West MP Esther McVey.

Money is still being counted but it is thought the Globe-backed event has raised around £9,000 for a special needs club in the town.

Race secretary Carla Williams told the Globe: "On behalf of Wednesday Special Needs Club, I would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all the runners who took part in the run. They were a brilliant bunch and well done.

“It was a lovely day for running. The runners, spectators, volunteers on the day were fantastic, so thank you.

“Thanks also to all the clubs volunteers and friends who helped on the day “Special thanks to St John’s Ambulance, Raynet radio support, and for our timekeepers ‘Brimage Team’!

First man across the finish line was Phil Walton, 32 from Wallasey AC in a time of 34 minutes and 13 seconds.

First woman was Charlotte Mason, aged 21, from City of York AC, in 38 minutes, five seconds.

The results from the race will be published on the special needs club's website www.wsnc.co.uk on Wednesday.
