A WIRRAL MP has backed calls for improved rail services between the Northwest and North Wales.

Alongside other MPs, Alison McGovern has called for better rail links between Wrexham and the Bidston line, which runs through Heswall, since she was elected and has pressed government ministers on the opportunities it would bring.

During a meeting in the House of Commons on Wednesday - chaired by Wrexham MP Ian Lucas - the Wirral South MP listened to the case being made for rail modernisation in the region.

Speaking after the meeting, she said: "Improved rail services can have great benefits for both passengers and the economy.

"As an MP serving on Merseyside I thought it was important to hear the case being made for such a development and what this would mean for the Northwest, including those living in the Wirral."

Ms McGovern added: "There are obviously clear benefits of the electrification of lines between the Northwest and North Wales and therefore I was pleased to be involved in the discussions that took place and hear about what these links could potentially do for our local economy in more detail.

"It is also important to encourage people to use trains as a transport method to cut congestion on our roads and it was discussed how improvements to the lines would be key to this."

The Welsh Government and Merseytravel are now working together to make improvements to the line.
