STUDENTS at a Wirral school took a trip into history to celebrate its founders' week and to leave a legacy for the future.

To mark the founding of The Birkenhead Park School, they investigated a century of education on Park Road South, from the creating of the original girls' grammar school to the present day, where the school finds itself as one of the most successful Wirral secondary schools.

Actors, historians and alumni of the schools that have occupied the buildings were on hand to talk about the predecessor schools and its place in the town's history.

Staff and dignitaries, including Wirral's mayor Steve Foulkes, are entertained by an actor playing the part of John Laird, the first mayor and MP of Birkenhead

Historical figures such as John Laird to Andrew Irvine were included, as were events like the First World War and commemorations of those who gave their lives in the service of the country.

Birkenhead Park School is the only one in Wirral to have climbed official government league tables every year since 2012 data.

It recently saw a change in governance with Wirral Academy Trust, set up by The Sixth Form College Birkenhead, become sole sponsors.

Students have been investigating the long history of the school buildings and of Birkenhead and its community.

The town's MP Frank Field and mayor Steve Foulkes were part of the celebrations, talking to students about their roles as citizens of the area.

The findings were presented to Headteacher Geraint Parry who, at the request of students, interred the research in the schools vault with strict instructions, recorded in the official school log which itself dates back to the 1900s, that future students should maintain and add to the collection.
