FIREFIGHTERS are warning people to make sure they have working smoke alarms fitted in their homes following a blaze in Birkenhead.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was called at 7.14am today to a property near Church Road.
Firefighters used a hose jet to extinguish the fire in a kitchen.
Watch Manager John Kellaway, who attended the call-out, said: “There were no working smoke alarms in the property.
“The fire involved food packaging on an electric hob that had been turned on by accident. There was severe fire damage to the kitchen.
“In line with our general fire safety advice, we advise people have working smoke alarms on each level of their home. We also advise people that, if they discover a fire, to get out of the building where it is, stay outside and call 999.”
Six people were checked for possible smoke inhalation by paramedics at the scene.
