A WIRRAL grandmother has recalled the terrifying moment she rescued her two grandsons from their flood-threatened home.

Francesca Edge told the Globe she had to wade through more than four foot of flood water to the home of two-year-old Frankie, who has recently been diagnosed as autistic, and four-year-old brother Charlie in Oakham Drive.

Mrs Edge, a mother of eight, had been at work when daughter Stephanie rang to say they were trapped in their house.

She led them out of the house one at a time and took them to a nearby day nursery. As it stands at the top of a grass verge, their home was not flooded, and the children returned this afternoon.

Mrs Edge, whose own home was flooded causing damage estimated at hundreds of pounds, told the Globe this afternoon: "I’m not a hero; I'm just someone who cares deeply about her grandchildren.

"Stephanie was getting stressed because Frankie was getting anxious and Charlie was panicking.

"I had to leave my car and wade through the water to their house."

The 59-year-old’s home and those of her neighbours in nearby Carnoustie Close were submerged in four feet of water.

Neighbours rallied round, buying and putting down sandbags in a bid to prevent floodwater entering their homes.

Mrs Edge said: "The neighbours have been lovely. They sandbagged all the houses, there was a real community spirit.

"We were left by the council to sort the mess out ourselves. We rang up and were basically told that unless there was any threat to life then nothing could be done.

"Why are we paying our council tax when nothing seems to get done when it reallty matters."

A neighbour echoed the frustration: “We’ve lived here for many years and the flooding has never been as bad as this.

“The council’s response was lousy. What are we paying our taxes for?”
