A LORRY driver accused of causing death by dangerous driving after a pile-up on the M53 appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today, Thursday.

Peter Tootle, who sat with his head bowed during the brief proceedings, is also accused of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The charges follow an incident near the junction 4 turnoff for Bebington on September 30 last year in which it is alleged his Volvo lorry collided with the rear of a stationery car queuing in traffic on the southbound lane shunting it into nine other vehicles.

The driver of the car, Mark Simon Done, died from his injuries and another driver, Paul Johnson, sustained serious injuries.

61-year-old Tootle, of Naomi Close, Chester, was further remanded on bail until November 30 when he is expected to enter his pleas. A trial date has provisionally been fixed to begin on February 1 next year.
