TRANMERE Rovers have signed striker Michael Higdon until the end of the season, subject to FA approval.

The 32-year-old comes to Prenton Park after leaving Sheffield United at the end of the January transfer window.

He featured for The Blades at the beginning of the season before joining fellow League One outfit Oldham Athletic on a three-month loan where he netted five goals in nine league starts.

Higdon began his career coming through the Academy system at Crewe Alexandra, and was originally used as a midfielder before Dario Gradi converted him into a striker.

After leaving Crewe, he moved north of the border and in 2012-13, he picked up the SPL Golden Boot after scoring 26 goals for Motherwell and was voted PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year.

His previous clubs also include Falkirk, St Mirren and Dutch Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen.

In an interview on Rovers' website, Higdon said this afternoon: "I'm looking for the opportunity to play football and am excited for the remaining games.

"Hopefully I can make an impact.

"I'm looking forward to training with the lads in the coming days.

"I've scored a decent amount of goals throughout my career so hopefully I can come here and do the same.

"Obviously, the aim is to get promoted. If I can get into the team and score some goals to help in keeping Tranmere at the right end of the table, that's the aim.

"I know quite a few of the boys who play here, so I speak to them regularly.

"They think they have a good chance of giving it a right good go this season so I'm looking forward to getting underway."

Manager Gary Brabin said: "I’m delighted that we are able to bring such an experienced and talented player as Michael into the squad.

"He is a local lad who fits the bill of what we’ve been looking for.

"He has been playing at League One level this season and will offer us a different dimension to the excellent attacking options we already have at our disposal."
