MERSEYSIDE Police are appealing for information after two robberies in Birkenhead last night.

The first saw a 44-year-old woman approached from behind by an unknown male as she walked along Hinderton Road at around 9.45pm.

The robber forced the woman to the ground and demanded her phone and cash before making off on foot.

The woman, who suffered minor injuries in the incident, later discovered a bank card was missing from her pocket.

She was only able to describe the man as wearing a grey tracksuit top with his face covered but it is believed a second male may also have been present.

In a second incident at around 10.15pm, a 28-year-old man was returning to his car which was parked at Green Lane train station on Old Chester Road.

As he approached his car he saw a male in the passenger seat.

The man got out and ran towards the victim demanding his phone.

Officers believe he may have been carrying a bladed weapon.

The victim was able to run away and raise the alarm.

The would-be robber was wearing a grey hooded top.

House-to-house inquiries have been carried out in the area and CCTV footage is being sought.

Detective inspector Paul Lamb said: "I would appeal for anyone who was in the vicinity of Hinderton Road or Green Lane station between 9.30pm and 10.30pm and may have seen people or persons acting suspiciously, or has any information which could help with our inquiries, to get in touch.

"This was an upsetting experience for both victims but I want to reassure the community we are doing everything we can to find those responsible."

Anyone with information should contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 2263 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
