TRANMERE ROVERS are set to host a breakfast event aimed at helping people to get fit and active.

The ‘Big Breakfast’ event which is the first in a new ‘Active Wirral’ campaign by Wirral Council will take place at Tranmere Rovers’ Recreation Centre, next to Prenton Park, on Wednesday June 29.

It will offer people the chance to take part in organised bike rides and advice sessions with a free breakfast provided.

Cllr Janette Williamson, Cabinet Member for Public Health said: “Cycling is a fun and sociable way to build exercise into your everyday life, and so it’s a fitting place to start our Active Wirral campaign.

“Pedal Away has been a great success in other parts of Merseyside, where we’ve seen hundreds of people enjoying cycling and the health benefits that come with it.”

“We are pledged to help Wirral people to live healthier lives, as part of our council plan for 2020, and I’m looking forward to many more Active Wirral events in the coming months.”

Active Wirral is a new campaign aimed at encouraging residents to build physical activity into their everyday life in ways other than joining a gym.

Tranmere Rovers are the first local business to sign up for the council’s Active Wirral campaign, which also includes a new community initiative, Pedal Away Wirral.

Funded by Public Health and supported by donations, Pedal Away has been successful across Merseyside at encouraging people to get on their bikes.

The project leaders provide the bikes, helmets and ride leaders to deliver organised rides along predominantly traffic-free routes.

Mark Palios, Chairman of Tranmere Rovers said: “Tranmere are delighted to be hosting the Bike Breakfast as part of the Active Wirral Campaign.

“The facilities at Prenton Park can be used for more than football. We will be looking to develop a Pedal Away from the ground and facilities to enable people to visit the club by bike.”

The Bike Breakfast runs from 09:30 to 11:30, and is open to all.

There will also be a ‘Dr Bike’ session hosted by Bike Right, with tips on bike maintenance.

Bikes will be available to borrow or people can bring their own.
