A NEW film has been produced aimed at helping tackle the problem of domestic abuse in Wirral.

Documenting first-hand accounts of abuse, the film explains how with the right support solutions can be found.

The nine-minute video - by charity Tomorrow’s Women Wirral - will be central to a council-led campaign raising awareness of the often hidden problem of violence in the home.

Latest statistics show the borough has a higher than average number of police recorded incidents of domestic abuse, and Merseyside the second highest level of recorded incidents in England.

Over a 12-month period, official data for Wirral shows:

5,364 incidents reported to police in 2015/16.

1,206 children were involved in these cases.

216 victims were treated at Arrowe Park Hospital's Accident and Emergency unit.

61% of attacks logged at A&E were alcohol-related.

Five domestic murders of women in last five years.

Wirral’s director of public health Fiona Johnstone's annual report was published yesterday and focusses on domestic abuse.

In the introduction to her review - "Domestic abuse: Let’s make a difference" - Ms Johnstone says: "It is important we act locally and work collaboratively with our neighbours to tackle this significant problem within our society.

"The impact of domestic abuse is far reaching as it affects individuals, families and society as a whole.

"I hope this report helps to further your understanding of domestic abuse and illustrate the importance of achieving our zero tolerance pledge.

"We need to do more to both prevent domestic abuse and where it is happening enable people to access support that is right for them.

" I believe we all have a role, be it as individuals or organisations, to tackle this important issue and I encourage you to play your part."

Councillor Janette Williamson, cabinet member for public health, said: "There is a high price to pay for tolerating domestic abuse.

"It not only costs lives it can deeply damage the self-esteem and confidence of those affected, particularly children.

"It’s important we work towards a zero tolerance approach to domestic abuse in our borough and put in whatever support we need to achieve this."
