PREMIERSHIP Rugby stars are set to help Wirral youngsters learn more about the game.

Sale Sharks players, Josh Beaumont and Mike Phillips are among those who will be giving rugby-mad children the opportunity to learn the skill of the game at two new summer camps.

A two-day course will be running at St Anselm’s College, Birkenhead, from Wednesday August 3 and is aimed at both boys and girls aged between six and 12.

Darren Lamon, the lead coach for the Sale Sharks camps, said: “These rugby camps are great fun and we run them right across the North West to give young people an opportunity to play rugby over the summer.

“Qualified coaches from the club are on-hand to give children tips and advice during the sessions and our first team players regularly get involved and help with the coaching too.

“We’re expecting a great three days of rugby at St Anselm’s College but places are limited so we’re urging people to book early to avoid disappointment.

“These camps really are where young sharks cut their teeth.” The players will also be providing one-day attacking rugby courses at the college aimed at 13-16 year olds.

Wales and British and Irish Lions star Mike Phillips and England forward Josh Beaumont will attend a total of 18 sessions across the region, giving children the chance to get up close with some of the biggest stars of Premiership Rugby.

Sale Sharks winger Will Addison was discovered at one of the club’s summer camps. He said: “These camps are a fantastic chance to learn new skills from some of the best coaches in the business and you never know what could come out of them.

“For some of the older kids, going to a camp might be the start of something special. It certainly was for me!”

Rugby Football Union qualified coaches from Sale Sharks’ award-winning community team will give youngsters advice on core skills such as running, evasion, handling, kicking and tackling as well as decision making in both attack and defence.

The camps, which are being run in conjunction with Premiership Rugby, cost £50 per child and includes a Sale Sharks branded gift and as well as a ticket to a Sharks home game.
