TWO guards were attacked and robbed as they delivered cash to a Wirral supermarket.

At around 1.35pm on Tuesday the guards left their security van and were heading towards Tesco Express in Liscard Village.

They were confronted by two men who assaulted them before stealing two boxes containing a "significant amount of cash."

Detectives believe the robbers left the scene in a silver coloured Volvo, possibly driven by a third man.

The car was later found abandoned in nearby Asda car park.

Officers believe the raiders then drove from the car park in a dark-coloured Peugeot which was also later found abandoned in Tobin Street, Egremont.

Both security guards were slightly injured and left distressed by their ordeal.

Detective Inspector Nick Price said: “This is not a victimless crime and for these guards to be subjected to this kind of violence while they are just carrying out their jobs is unacceptable.

"We are carrying out a number of enquiries in the area including the examination of CCTV and forensic enquiries on the recovered vehicles.

"We are also appealing for anyone who has any information or who witnessed either the incident or the disposal of the vehicles to get in contact.

“We’d be keen to hear from anyone who was shopping in Tesco or Asda who saw two or three men acting suspiciously in the area to get in contact."

Call police on 0151 777 8618 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Officers say any information no matter how small will be treated with the utmost confidence and could assist the investigation.
