The newly appointed Bishop of Birkenhead visited Christ Church Higher Bebington on Saturday morning to bless its magnificent poppy installation.
Bishop Julie Conalty was shown the impressive artwork, that was created by the local community to commemorate the lives that had been lost in war and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion.
Bishop Julie pinned her own poppy on the cascade and said that she hoped it would “serve as a reminder to everyone of the sacrifices made by so many”.
She was welcomed to the church by Rev Michael Loach, and members of the parish, who enjoyed coffee and croissants with her in their community centre after the blessing.
More than 10,000 poppies were knitted and crocheted by the community during the last year and the poppy cascade is a credit to all of them.
Wirral Council supplied the church with sandbags for the trench and the scaffolding was provided for free by Merseyside Scaffolding.
The installation will be in place for another 10 days and has already attracted hundreds of visitors during the last week.
