A ROOM in a local veteran’s club has been named after a Wirral war hero.

Corporal Josh Griffiths, 33, from Eastham opened the room on Saturday, July 23 at The Wirral Joint Services Club.

Corporal Griffiths received his Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for action in Afghanistan whilst serving with the Mercian Regiment.

Now a welfare room providing a quiet space for members of the club has been named after him.

Wirral Globe:

Josh told the Globe: “Listening to what the club has achieved already for some members shows how necessary and effective it is.

“The room will benefit members and I am proud to be part of the Wirral Joint Services Club.”

The club celebrated the opening with a parade, a live band performance from The Battle of the Somme Marching Band, and entertainment from Angi Harker.

During the opening ceremony, Josh attended and officially opened the room.

The club, which local military veterans created as a place to go and be understood, offers signposting for any veterans in difficulty and provides help to those who need it.

Member of the club Carl Tomlinson said: “On taking over the club premises in March 2022 there is a lot of much-needed refurbishment to be done.

Wirral Globe:

“One of these projects was converting an old pool room to a welfare and quiet space where members can go and reflect whilst still enjoying the club environment.

“Josh Griffiths was approached to see if this room could be named after him as an inspiration for others.

“It is there to help veterans in Wirral both physically and emotionally. The club is intended to be a focal point where those who need help can get signposted to the right people who can help or get direct help from the club.”

Wirral Globe:

Club chairman, Simon Parker, said: “The club has grown so much in just a short time.

“We now have a room for all to enjoy some quiet reflection and thank the volunteers for moving the club forward.”

The club, on St George's Rd, Wallasey, CH45 3NF, is open Mon-Wed 1000hrs - 1200 hrs for breakfast or just a coffee and chat.

Wed - Sun the club is open in the evening and all are welcome.
