AN Ellesmere Port scout team, who range from ages 10-14, took part in a two-day 30km hike last weekend winning in their district.

8th Ellesmere Port Scout Group was founded in 1941.

Five of the scout members from the group took part in the Cheshire Hike on April 1 and 2, walking 30km, plotting their own routes, reading maps, doing compass work, and building tents.

There are also various checkpoints along the way where the group could earn extra points.

They have to sleep in the tent they have built overnight and cook their own dinner.

One of the District Leaders, Anthony Atkins, who has been involved with the scouts for over 20 years, told the Globe: "We give them various training before they go. They set off on their own but they are checked in throughout the day so we know where they are.

"As leaders, we don't know the route they are taking but we train them to use a map and compass."

This year's route started in Congleton and finished in Macclesfield.

The group of five not only completed the hike but came 13th out of 92 teams.

Also, for the first time ever, 8th Ellesmere Port Scouts Group came first overall in the Neston and Ellesmere Port district.

Anthony added: "We were shocked when they won. We do our best but it's what they do on the day because anything could happen.

"We were really proud that they won their district and came 13th out of 92 teams."
