AN ice cream shop in Wirral has been given the lowest food hygiene rating following its latest inspection.

Caffe Cream located at Marine Point in New Brighton scored zero stars after an inspection on March 14, 2023.

Known for their homemade ice cream, milkshakes and sweet treats, Caffe Cream operates four ice cream parlours across Wirral.

Inspectors from Wirral Council found the restaurant required "urgent improvement" in all categories. Categories include the management of food safety, hygienic food handling and cleanliness and conditions of facilities and buildings.

The "hygienic handling of food" in the restaurant includes preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage. "Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building" involves layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities, and pest control.

"Management of food safety" which also required "urgent improvement" looks at the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

'Confident we will regain the five-star rating...'

A spokesperson for Caffe Cream highlighted that they were "incredibly disappointed" with the rating, as they had maintained a five-star rating for over a decade.

They said: "We’re incredibly disappointed with this rating and have taken immediate action to address the points raised.

"Our team has conducted a thorough audit as a direct response to the feedback we received and we are satisfied that the requisite corrective measures have been met.

"We have invited a re-inspection and we are confident that we will regain the same five rating that we have held for a decade."
