A man was arrested outside the California home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex earlier this week following an alleged incident, a spokesman for the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office said.

The alleged incident happened at around 2am on Monday, when a staff member placed the suspect under citizen’s arrest at the couple’s Montecito home.

Kevin Garcia Valdovinos, a 29-year-old, has been identified as the suspect, CBS News reports.

The Sheriff’s office told CBS News that the suspect was charged with prowling, a misdemeanour, instead of stalking after a follow-up investigation.

The investigation continues and the suspect was booked in jail before being released on a bail of $2,500, according to the spokesperson.

Whether Harry and Meghan were home while the incident took place remains unclear.

Harry and Meghan caught up in a ‘near catastrophic’ car chase in New York on Tuesday

The following day, the couple were caught up in a “near catastrophic” car chase in New York as they left an awards ceremony with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland.

Paparazzi followed their car as they left the Ms Foundation for Women’s 50th anniversary gala event.

Meghan picked up the Ms Foundation’s Women of Vision Award, recognising her “global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls”.

Renowned journalist and feminist activist Gloria Steinem presented Meghan with the award.

The public appearance was the couple's first together since Prince Harry was seen alone at his father's Coronation earlier this month.
