A PUB in West Kirby has been named Wirral CAMRA Pub of the Season for summer 2023.

The White Lion on Grange Road was taken over by Andy Cockran in 2018.

Speaking to the Globe, Andy, from West Kirby said: "I've been running pubs for over 30 years now and because I'm from West Kirby I just always wanted The White Lion.

"The previous owners both died, and I'd registered my interest, so when it became available I took it."

The pub has had a complete refurbishment, creating a back garden space, with an outdoor bar, marquee and seating.

Housed in a two hundred year-old sandstone building close to the centre of West Kirby, The White Lion can date its history back to the 1890s.

With its quirky lay out over several different levels it offers lots of cosy nooks to sit in along with a real fire to keep you warm in winter. During warmer months you can enjoy the fantastic beer garden to the rear.

The pub has five cask ale taps featuring some of the finest breweries in the local area as well as old favorites such as Rev James and Black Sheep Bitter that are generally on permanently alongside a great range of seasonally changing local ales from the likes of Peerless, Brimsatge, Neptune and Love Lane Brewery.

Andy added: "I just love the character of the pub, the locals we get in are great and they really support you."

On Saturday (July 15) Helen Duffy, the pub manager, was presented with the award naming them pub of the season in Wirral.

"It's a good achievement because there are a lot of places on the Wirral serving real ale", Andy said.

The White Lion has also recently teamed back up with Bamboo Thai to serve food at the pub to its customers.
