A WIRRAL artist who has created a new mural of the late Glenda Jackson has said it honours her "diverse and impactful contributions".

Brezaux is a Wallasey-based artist and is behind the recent Paul O'Grady mural that is located on the banks of the Mersey near the Woodside Ferry Terminal on the edge of the Woodside Business Park.

He has also created various street art designs in places such as New Brighton.

Wirral-born Glenda Jackson, who was a double Oscar-winning actress and Labour MP for 23 years, died peacefully following a brief illness on June 15, 2023 at the age of 87.

The new mural, which is located about 100 yards from the Paul O'Grady mural and is commissioned by Peel Holdings, shows Glenda in black and white, with two Oscar trophies and the House of Commons logo in red, to represent her time as a Labour MP.

Speaking to the Globe, Brezaux said the mural aims to "capture Glenda's multifaced career".

He added: "I depicted her holding two of her most prestigious awards, which are the two Oscars, symbolising her acting prowess.

"I also incorporated elements representing her political career.

"The mural served as a testament to Jackson's remarkable ability to excel in both the world of art and politics, honouring her diverse and impactful contributions."

Jackson's success and career

At a Wirral Council meeting on October 9, it was unanimously decided to give the late actress the title of the Freedom of the Borough posthumously, the highest honour it can give.

Jackson won a best actress Oscar in 1970 for Women In Love and again three years later for A Touch Of Class.

She later left acting temporarily to serve as the MP for Hampstead and Highgate from 1992 to 2015 and served in Tony Blair’s government between 1997 and 1999.

After standing down in 2015 as MP, she returned to acting winning a Bafta for best actress in 2019 for her role in Elizabeth Is Missing, which followed the story of a woman suffering from dementia.

Following her death, her last appearance in a movie, The Great Escaper, where she stars alongside Michael Caine, premiered on Friday, October 6.
