THE owner of a Spanish-inspired tapas restaurant said he was "amazed" when he found out his venue had won a Good Food Award.

The Tapas Kitchen, on Banks Road in West Kirby, was opened by Colin Gordon, in 2017.

Colin, from Greasby, has previously worked at The Manor for 25 years, making his way from a pot washer up to manager.

After leaving The Manor seven years ago, Colin got a call from a previous colleague, Peter, saying a property had become available in West Kirby.

Speaking to the Globe, Colin, 49 said: "Me and Peter had a chat and our original plan was an Italian tapas restaurant but we had a look around and suddenly realised there were an awful lot of Italian restaurants in the West Kirby area.

"We found a supplier in Yorkshire, a Spanish chef who imported drinks and food and decided to open a Spanish tapas restaurant instead."

Colin describes The Tapas Kitchen as "Spanish-inspired food with an English twist".

The restaurant serves Sunday roasts and also hosts a Sunday Social, where a different menu is created each Sunday by the chef based on what food the kitchen has left.

Colin and his team of 12 staff found out that they had won a Good Food Award in October, but couldn't share the good news until it was announced on Monday (November 13).

"We found out about the Good Food Awards a few years ago", Colin explained.

"We were amazed when we found out we had won. We couldn't say anything at first because it couldn't be announced.

"This year has been bitter-sweet as Peter, my business partner, passed away at the beginning of this year.

"I just want to thank everyone for their support. We wouldn’t have been able to get where we are without our customers, especially in this climate.

"We were one of the lucky ones to survive the pandemic."

The Tapas Kitchen is located at 95 Banks Rd, West Kirby, CH48 0RB and is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
