WIRRAL gritting crews have stood down from duty after being on call 24/7 since November.
Crews have been on standby 24 hours a day seven days a week between November and April ready to take to the main roads to spread rock salt to minimise any impact from ice or snow on the roads.
Wirral’s fleet of gritters spreads salt along 10 pre-planned routes that prioritises 265 miles of public highway.
Around 1,900 tonnes of salt is used in an average winter and this season the crews have been out 29 times and spread approximately 1,300 tonnes of salt.
Rock salt will continue to be stored under covered storage at the council’s salt dome ready for next season, which will start in November 2024.
