A SMALL group of competitiors from Wallasey-based Liverpool Victoria Rowing Club went south to the popular Ross-on-Wye Regatta weekend.
Their recent winning ways continued with an early victory in Saturday’s invitation Dragon Boat Racing “fun” event - when LVRC juniors seriously challenged the senior crew winners of last year with a faster time in the heats.
Sunday’s Regatta saw the Wirral girls dominate, with emphatic wins in the J18 double and J18 and J16 quads event, again beating this season’s closest rival crews from Nottingham.
The boys' J18 double were heading for victory too when equipment failure struck to deny them of a comfortable victory.
Bank Holiday Monday was the adult race day. To make up for their loss the day before, the boys raced in the men’s quads event, and Ben McWilliams also raced in the men’s single, beating a good Cambridge based specialist sculler in the final.
Both events were assured victories for the Wirral crews, making it six sets of trophies from the weekend’s racing.
The regatta season draws to a close in early September with the North of England Sprint Championships, where the club will race with great optimism in many events.
After that, it is the autumn phase for athlete and club development. Anyone wishing to join this successful club is welcome, particularly 14 –to-16 year-old juniors to start off in the junior squad, and then any age after that to join senior rowing or the masters age group categories.
