A TEAM of past captains from Bromborough Golf Club has won the coveted Jack Stanway Johnson Trophy.

The competition took place during the Autumn meeting of Liverpool Society of Golf Captains. It was held at Alwoodley Golf Club, Sand Moor Golf Club and Harrogate Golf Club in the last week of August.

Competing were 24 clubs from Wirral, Liverpool and North West England.

Bromborough triumphed in the competition having the three best aggregate individual scores over the three-day meeting.

The three Bromborough past Captains with the counting scores were Charles Abbott, who also won the Tom Wolfenden Prize for the best individual score for those over 65; John Colligan the Immediate Past Captain who performed superbly at the incredibly tough Alwoodley layout to win the day prize there and veteran Merv Robertson, Captain of Bromborough as far back as 1981.

Mike Heathfield, captain of Bromborough Golf Club, said: "this was an exceptional performance as our team had the worst of the draw with weather conditions.

"We last won this trophy back in 2008 though we have finished runners-up on several occasions in recent years.

"It is testament to the general playing strength at Bromborough where we have enjoyed success during the 2014 season across the age groups for both Men and Ladies.

"Whilst the courses we played were all in excellent condition they were also challenging so it helped us that we are used to being tested in a similar way by our own course at Bromborough, Wirral’s Parkland Jewel."
