Steve Jennings was full of praise for teammate James Norwood following the striker’s late winning goal against Eastleigh that kept Tranmere’s play-off hopes intact.

Norwood’s 87th minute header earned Rovers a crucial three points at the Silverlake Stadium on Saturday.

They now head into the final game of the season needing a win against Grimsby at Prenton Park - while also hoping that Altrincham can win away at Braintree Town.

The odds may be stacked against them but Rovers’ captain Jennings was happy that Saturday’s three points kept the promotion dream alive.

He said: “We took our chance. I thought we could have took one or two earlier on in the game.

"We could have made it easier for ourselves but we don’t do that.

“They started the game quite well.

"They’ve got a good little formation they play in and sometimes it’s quite hard to near a couple of them, but credit to us, we rode our luck on the odd occasion, stuck to our game plan, never gave up and went to the 90th minute.

“I’m happy with the win and I’m happy for Nors scoring the winning goal.

"He’d chase a paper bag around the pitch if he had to.

"He seems to score the hard ones and the bread and butter ones, he seems to find hard.

“It’s been a frustrating few years with back-to-back relegations.

"But we’ve got to put all our efforts and luck in one basket next weekend and if it’s not meant to be we all get behind each other and go again next season.

“We go into [the final game] with something to look forward to instead of losing away to Plymouth and wanting to jump off the nearest bridge.”
