TRANMERE Rovers chairman Mark Palios has backed a council campaign encouraging people to take regular exercise.

Active Wirral aimed at getting more people playing sport, with a particular focus on young women and families.

Figures show that a third of Wirral women participate in sport at least once a week, with just over one in 10 girls at age 14 meeting government guidelines for physical activity, less than half the figure for boys of the same age.

Single parent families get 56% less exercise than those with two parents.

According to Sport England estimations, doubling the amount that Wirral's 40-79 year olds exercise in a year could prevent 283 deaths.

As part of its commitment to the campaign, Tranmere Rovers will organise activities across the borough, including in parks, leisure centres and at the National League club’s new training facility at Solar Campus in Moreton.

Chairman Mark Palios said: "Tranmere Rovers are delighted to be part of Active Wirral.

"The club is constantly increasing the opportunities we provide for members of the community to take part in regular physical activity, ensuring the offer is accessible, affordable, and will appeal to what people want."

Wirral's deputy mayor and cabinet member for transformation and leisure, Cllr Ann McLachlan, said: "Active Wirral is an exciting new campaign to get Wirral people moving and trying out sports and activities that they might never have thought about taking on.

"Having Tranmere Rovers on board is a big statement, and I know there’s already a lot of events and activities planned in for summer 2016."

Each month, starting from June, will have its own theme and themed events. June is Let's Ride month, focusing on making it easier for people to take up cycling.
