WIRRAL overcame Penrith 24-12 at a windy Memorial Ground.
Despite the recent rain, the Memorial Ground was in good condition for the first ever visit by Penrith, in this penultimate league game of the season; however the strong wind made its own difficulties.
Playing with the wind in the first half, Wirral had the territorial possession and in the first half of the game, the hosts scored two tries through their forwards, Chris Speed and acting captain, Hayden Long.
12-0 up at half time soon became 24-0 when Wirral passed the ball to their backs and scored two fine individual tries through Tom Cole and Tom Akehurst along with two conversions from Mark Williams to give Wirral a big lead after 60 minutes.
Penrith then had a greater share of the ball possession and therefore territory and in the final 20 minutes of the game scored two tries themselves through their forwards.
The win leaves Wirral fourth place in the league.
They play second placed Rossendale on April 6. Kick- off is 3pm and the club look forward to a large crowd down at the ground for this game.
