THIS was the first of a series of games for Wirral in the Papa John’s plate against Syston from Leicestershire, who are in the equivalent Midlands League.
Playing with the wind in the first half, it was Syston who went into a 0-14 lead, following mistakes by Wirral, however a change in personnel after 30 minutes enabled Wirral to equalise the score through tries by Rhys James and Adam Don by half time.
In the first minute of the second half, Wirral took the lead with a try by Tom Akehurst but again Syston came back to equalise with a try to make the score 21-21 after 58 minutes.
Wirral reapplied themselves and came back with further tries by Hayden Long and Akehurst and with two penalties from Jimmy Annetts (who scored 16 points) to increase the Wirral lead to 41-21.
Next week Wirral are away to Derby in the next stage of the competition before playing the final game of the knock out section against Burton-on-Trent on April 27 at Wirral where a big crowd will be down to see this game, to hopefully decide who goes on to play in the semi finals of the competition.
