ON SUNDAY, September 18, a BBC news feature highlighted the lack of wheelchair access to quite a number of tourist attractions in Rio de Janeiro.
This was a follow-up to the Paralympic games.
The report was critical of Brazil for not making such places more "wheelchair friendly".
"Isn't that dreadful in this day and age," I suppose we, sitting watching in the UK, are expected to be thinking.
Well, I think it is dreadful that there is a complete lack of wheelchair access at both Spital and Port Sunlight Merseyrail stations.
I have in the past written to Merseytravel and Merseyrail and they say that stations with a higher usage are allocated funding for improvements.
How many people are not using these stations because they cannot access them?
It isn't only wheelchair users who are denied days out, it is parents and grandparents with prams and pushchairs.
While waiting at Birkenhead station I have seen a steady stream of "pram-pushers" using the lift there, they are the lucky ones who have been provided with a lift or ramp at their place of departure.
Come on Merseyside, let's at least stay in front of Brazil.
